Swell Labs: Has Solid Personal Care Found a Better Way?

Plastic-free personal care already exists. The harder question is whether people actually want to keep using it.

Solid shampoo and body-care products can reduce reliance on disposable bottles, but they can also bring familiar practical frustrations: mushiness, awkward storage, slippery handling, inconsistent longevity, or simply an experience people enjoy less than what they were already using. Swell Labs appears to have recognized that problem and designed around the inconvenience itself. [1, 2]

So the question we wanted to answer was simple:

Has Swell Labs found a better way to make solid personal care practical enough to replace the bottle?

Based on what we found, we think the answer is: for many consumers, yes. The product is not perfect, and some claims remain stronger than the evidence we could independently verify. But the central innovation appears real, consumers have responded positively in meaningful ways, and the strongest parts of Swell Labs’ case do not depend on its most ambitious marketing claims.

Designing Around the Problem

Stem uses a concentrated solid formula surrounded by a beeswax shell and paired with a base-and-cap system. Instead of exposing the entire product to water every time it is used, the design is meant to protect most of the formula while gradually exposing what the user needs. [3]

That changes the problem. Rather than asking people to tolerate the inconveniences of a solid bar, Swell Labs is trying to make the lower-waste option competitive on experience, not guilt.

How do we make the lower-waste option easier to choose again tomorrow?

The Shell Is More Than Packaging

The beeswax shell is the heart of Stem’s design, and the concept is backed by more than marketing language. A published U.S. patent application filed by Charles Fredrick Mackenbach describes a protective coating system for solid cosmetic and hygiene products, including water-resistant natural wax coatings and methods for exposing fresh product as it is used. [4]

The application remains pending, so the most accurate description is patent-pending. That gives us confidence that Swell Labs has done substantive product-development work around one of the reasons solid personal-care products can frustrate users.

Does It Work in Real Life?

For many people, apparently yes. Swell Labs’ own customer reviews repeatedly praise Stem for staying intact, lasting a long time, traveling well, and avoiding the mushiness associated with some other bars. Outside the company’s website, a third-party retailer reported still using its first Stem after six months of daily use and specifically praised the beeswax shell for keeping the product from getting mushy or messy. [3, 5]

Community discussion tells a more varied story, which is useful. Some users report very good results and no longer needing conditioner; others still use conditioner or report low lather, dryness, flatness, breakage, or difficulty with the base. [6, 7]

That does not erase the positive response. It tells us something more realistic: the physical design appears to solve a genuine usability problem, while the formula itself will not work identically for everyone.

The Environmental Case We Can Support

The clearest environmental benefit is straightforward: Stem is a concentrated solid product designed to replace conventional bottled shampoo or body wash. If it successfully replaces repeated bottled purchases, it can reduce reliance on conventional plastic packaging in that routine. [3]

Swell Labs also says its system is plastic-free and describes the base and cap as a proprietary spruce-wood and natural-sap material intended to biodegrade. Those claims may ultimately prove accurate, but we did not locate independent documentation establishing the full material composition or end-of-life behavior of that system, nor a visible test report supporting the company’s specific 180-day biodegradation claim. [3, 8]

So our confidence is different across the claims:

The plastic-reduction strategy is clear. The precise biodegradation claims remain company claims.

We can recognize the first without presenting the second as independently established.

Where the Claims Get Ahead of the Evidence

Swell Labs says Stem lasts 120+ washes and roughly 250% longer than ordinary shampoo bars. Customer and retailer evidence supports the broader idea that the product can last a long time, but we did not find independent testing confirming those exact numbers. [3, 5]

The company also says 87% of users stop using conditioner by the end of week two. Many customers do report no longer needing it, while others clearly still do. We did not locate the methodology behind the 87% figure. [3, 6, 7]

The site also makes stronger hair-health claims involving lipid retention, density, elasticity, and structural repair. Independent ingredient literature supports ordinary conditioning and moisturizing roles for ingredients used in Stem, but it does not establish every product-level mechanism exactly as the marketing presents it. [9, 10]

None of this leads us to conclude that Stem does not work. It leads us to a simpler rule: where the evidence is strong, we will say so. Where the evidence remains a company claim, we will say that too.

What Else We Noticed

A small number of customers have alleged unexpected subscription charges. The current Swell Labs product page visibly separates one-time purchase from Subscribe & Save, and the evidence we found was not strong enough to establish deceptive enrollment as a company practice. [3, 6]

We are not turning an unresolved complaint into a verdict, but recurring billing deserves clarity, so the issue remains preserved in our evidence record. Swell’s current return policy also provides a 30-day return window with a prepaid label after approval and no restocking fee for eligible returns. [11]

TGF Status: Recommended For Now

Swell Labs has earned our current recommendation.

The strongest evidence points to meaningful product-design work around a real consumer problem. Stem appears to make solid personal care easier to use and more practical for people seeking to reduce reliance on disposable plastic bottles. The patent-pending shell system is substantive, customers have responded positively in meaningful ways, and the core plastic-reduction case does not depend on the company’s weakest marketing claims. [4, 5, 6]

We also found claims we could not independently confirm, including precise biodegradation timelines, exact longevity figures, conditioner-elimination percentages, and some stronger hair-health mechanisms. Those limits are preserved plainly in our accompanying evidence record.

They do not, in our judgment, outweigh the evidence supporting the central product innovation.

This recommendation reflects what the evidence gives us good reason to believe now. We will revisit it as the product, company, practices, consumer experience, and available evidence change.

Truth has to matter more than preserving a previous conclusion.

##Our Current Read

Swell Labs appears to be doing something worthwhile. It took a lower-waste product category with familiar practical frustrations and asked whether better design could remove some of them.

The company still has room to improve its evidentiary transparency around several environmental and performance claims. We would like to see that happen. But perfection is not the standard for recognizing good work.

A bottle is easy to eliminate on paper. The harder challenge is creating something people do not immediately want to replace it with.

Swell Labs may have found one way forward.

And that is worth bringing into the light.
